Could Desert Ants Help Cut Air-Conditioning Bills?
One of the more interesting ideas in cooling technology has a surprisingly small source of inspiration: the Saharan silver ant.
Hong Kong company i2Cool has developed passive cooling materials inspired by the insect’s ability to survive extreme desert heat. Its coatings aim to keep building surfaces cooler without electricity powering the cooling process.
The science behind it is real. Research published in 2015 found that the ant’s distinctive silver hairs help reflect sunlight and release body heat through infrared radiation. Essentially, nature gave these ants a way to manage heat long before anyone fitted a split system.
i2Cool applies similar principles to building materials. Its coatings combine high solar reflectivity with the ability to release heat as infrared radiation. The company reports solar reflectivity of up to 95% for its cooling coating—meaning much of the incoming sunlight is reflected rather than absorbed. That figure describes reflectivity, not a 95% reduction in electricity bills.
For HVAC, the attraction is straightforward: reducing heat entering a building could reduce the cooling load the air-conditioning system needs to handle. For Australian warehouses, workshops and other buildings with large sun-exposed roofs, that makes the technology an interesting prospect.
The company already lists commercial applications, including a library in Guangzhou and a rooftop installation in Hong Kong. These are manufacturer-reported examples, with results specific to each project.
It is best viewed as another way to help manage building heat, alongside insulation, shading and efficient air conditioning. A cooler roof surface does not automatically mean the same temperature reduction indoors.
Still, it is an appealing idea: help the air conditioner by keeping some of the heat out in the first place.
And credit where it’s due—the ants managed it without a compressor, a service call or an argument over the thermostat.
