How Often Should Aircon Be Cleaned in Humid Weather? đź’§

In hot, humid climates, air conditioning often runs for long hours. Keeping it clean helps maintain airflow, cooling performance and reliable drainage.

🧼 Air filters: about every two weeks

For a split system used daily, checking and cleaning the washable filters every two weeks is a good starting point. Dusty rooms, pets or heavy use may mean they need attention sooner.

Follow your unit’s instructions—some specialty filters aren’t washable.

🔧 Internal cleaning: depends on use and condition

Clean filters don’t necessarily mean a clean unit. Dirt can also build up on the indoor coil, blower wheel, drain tray and drain pipe.

For units working hard in tropical conditions, a professional inspection every 3–6 months is a practical starting point. Cleaning frequency should depend on the condition of the unit and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

⚠️ Don’t wait for the next service if you notice:

  • Musty or unpleasant smells

  • Water dripping indoors

  • Weak airflow

  • Visible dirt or mould

  • Reduced cooling or ice forming

These symptoms need investigation—cleaning alone may not fix the cause.

âś… A few simple tips

  • Switch off and isolate the power before cleaning.

  • Only wash filters designed to be washed, and dry them fully before refitting.

  • Keep leaves and debris clear of the outdoor unit.

  • Have persistent smells or drainage problems checked professionally.

What’s your experience?

If you live or work in a humid climate, how often do you clean your aircon? Have you found the filters stay clean while the blower wheel gets dirty?

I’ve had a heat pump installed for a while now, and I’ve noticed that keeping up with regular maintenance really does make a difference, especially during humid weather. Cleaning the filters is something I try to stay on top of, but I’ve also found that professional heat pump servicing Perth can help identify things like restricted airflow, drainage issues, or buildup that isn’t always obvious. It’s definitely better to catch those problems early rather than wait until the system starts struggling. Thanks for sharing these tips!
