Air Conditioner Running but Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check First ❄️

Your aircon is switched on and blowing air, but the room still feels warm. Before booking a technician, here are a few simple checks that may help narrow down the problem.

1️⃣ Check the mode and temperature

Make sure it’s set to COOL, usually shown by a snowflake symbol. FAN mode only circulates air.

Set the temperature below the current room temperature and allow time for cooling to start. Some units have a short compressor restart delay.

2️⃣ Check the filters

Dirty filters restrict airflow and can reduce cooling performance. Clean washable filters according to your unit’s instructions and let them dry before refitting.

3️⃣ Check for blocked airflow

Keep indoor air outlets and return-air grilles clear of furniture and curtains. Check that leaves or other debris aren’t blocking the outdoor unit.

4️⃣ Look at the outdoor unit

Is it operating while the system is calling for cooling? If it stays stopped and the room isn’t cooling, that’s useful information for a technician.

Inverter systems vary their speed, so a quiet outdoor unit doesn’t automatically mean there’s a fault.

5️⃣ Look for ice

Ice on the indoor unit or refrigerant pipes can indicate an airflow problem, a refrigerant issue or another fault.

Stop cooling and arrange an inspection if icing occurs. Don’t chip the ice off.

6️⃣ Check whether the problem affects every room

If only one room is warm, check its vents and ducted-system zone settings.

If cooling mainly struggles during hot afternoons, open doors, direct sun, insulation or system capacity could be contributing.

7️⃣ Don’t assume it “just needs gas”

An air conditioner doesn’t normally use up refrigerant. A low charge needs investigation for a leak or an incorrect original charge.

Weak cooling can also come from airflow, controls, sensors or compressor problems.

⚠️ Leave electrical and refrigerant work to a qualified technician. Switch off the system if there’s a burning smell, repeated breaker tripping or an unusual loud noise.

If the basic checks like cleaning the filters and making sure the outdoor unit has good airflow don’t solve the problem, it may be worth having the system properly inspected. Issues such as refrigerant leaks, electrical faults, frozen coils, or a failing compressor can cause an air conditioner to run without actually cooling the room effectively. For persistent problems, arranging an air conditioning service Perth can help identify the underlying issue before it leads to a more expensive repair.
